Indus Magic

Overview

Indus MAGIC is an acronym for Innovate, develop and up-scale MAGIC [modular, agile, intensified and continuous] processes and plants. This Indus MAGIC research program of CSIR is formulated based on critical analysis and understanding of the needs of Indian fine and specialty chemical industry. Specialty/ fine chemical industry forms the backbone of industrial and agricultural development of India. Over the years, the industry has evolved from a basic chemical producer to knowledge intensive industry. The industry also exhibited healthy growth. To fulfill the demands for addressing hitherto unmet and ever growing needs as well as expectations of a rapidly developing India, the fine and specialty chemicals sector is expected to grow at nearly double the rate of growth of overall economy. These new opportunities, the sheer magnitude of projected expansion and increasing demands on sustainability require tremendous research and technology inputs to support and to realize this expected growth. The Indus MAGIC research program is planned as a first step to meet these needs and to facilitate transformation of Indian fine and specialty chemical industry.


The Indus MAGIC project targets development of new ways of designing process equipment and their integration with process chemistry to realize atom efficient (creating less waste products per kg of desired product), environmentally benign and globally competitive processes. It is interesting to note that ever since the manufacturing and processing of chemicals have begun in early 19th century with the laboratory synthesis of urea, the methods and devices have remained largely the same. Most of the fine and specialty chemicals are still manufactured in stirred batch reactors (devised centuries ago). The Indus Magic is aimed at developing innovative solutions to radically transform Indian fine and specialty chemical industry. Key components of this program are:

It is based on the ‘MAGIC’ processes and plants for specialty chemical industry with following key characteristics:
  • Modular: new types of equipment and the connectors to bring out true modular capability
  • Agile: the quick and easy assembling of the plant to tailor the requirements of the given chemistry; new designs to facilitate multiple products campaigns with minimum transition time and resources.
  • Intensified: new types of process equipment and contacting/ mixing devices for enhancing transport rates and effective rates of chemical reactions.
  • Continuous: paradigm shift from batch to continuous with different control strategies for realizing new age specialty chemical industry

Under this program, catalysis, reaction engineering and new concepts in process equipment intensification will be used synergistically to provide effective and economic solutions which will catch up & overtake global benchmarks in quality, cost, environmental impact (reduce carbon and water footprints) and safety. The components of modular, agile, intensified and continuous (MAGIC) chemical plant facility will be established during the course of this project. Attempt will be made to use wireless technologies to develop new ways of designing reconfigurable plants. An industry consortium on process intensification (Indus CPI) is established to facilitate translation of the benefits of research and developments being made under the Indus MAGIC program to practice. A unique program which involves large number of chemical engineering and/or process chemistry students for sensitizing them to MAGIC concepts and to harness their capacity for carrying out techno-economic analysis of MAGIC processes entitled Indus Scholar is also established.



Five CSIR chemical cluster laboratories including NCL, IICT, CSMCRI, CLRI and NIIST are participating in this program. The ‘MAGIC’ processes and plants aimed in this project have a potential for making a significant impact and paradigm shift for Indian fine and specialty chemical industry.
